We are happy that you chose Sinai-Grace for your Physical Diagnosis training. The recommended reading is Textbook of Physical Diagnosis, History & Examination by Mark H. Swartz, M.D. Students are advised to bring their PD folders for all sessions, especially the checklists. The necessary equipments you need to bring are: Otoscope / Ophthalmoscope, Penlight, Ruler and tape measure, Sphygmomanometer, Stethoscope, Reflex hammer, 128 & 512 cps tuning forks, Snellen eye chart, and White jackets. Tongue blades, thermometer, cotton and sharps, rubber gloves, and gauze-pads are available on patient floors, in the Clean Utility Rooms.
We recruit patients for PD, the day before your session. We inform each patient about what is expected of him or her. In spite of this, you may find that your assigned patient is not available, because of a change in their condition, radiological or endoscopic procedures, unexpected discharge, or they may simply refuse to be examined. If this happens, we will do our best to provide a back-up patient. This is a problem that happens every year, since the admission and discharge criteria are strict in this time of cost-containment, and we request you to be patient.
PD sessions at Sinai-Grace start at 10.30 a.m. and end at 12.00 p.m. Please be prompt. After the scheduled lectures are over, (see the lecture schedule), you can report at 10.20 a.m. for the sessions. Past mid - term, you can report at 10.20 a.m. and go to your assigned patient rooms, and start taking the history. Your Attending will join you for the Physical Exam and discussion part. The Attending:Student ratio is 1: 2. The patient:student ratio is 1 : 2.
