General Pediatrics Wards
Location: Children's Hospital

Objectives:
- Attain and demonstrate a
level of diagnostic and assessment skills in the evaluation of children
beyond that achieved in the junior clerkship.
- Gain facility in the
development and implementation of inpatient and discharge care plans.
- Assume increasing levels of
responsibility for management of acutely ill and medically complex
patients.
- Increase accuracy of record
keeping.
- Gain an understanding of the
impact of acute and chronic illness on growth and development.
- Understand the importance of
family and community in the provision of health care services.
- Increase familiarity with the
use of pediatric resources; literature, consultants, ancillary support
personnel, and community groups.
- Enhance ability to work
independently.
- Improve ability to function as
an interdependent team member
Method:
The intern will be assigned to an
inpatient ward team consisting of other interns, a senior resident and faculty
attending. The responsibilities include call every fourth night,
admission history and physical exams, daily progress notes, presentation to
attendings, and all direct communications with family members.
Participation in Morning Report and Grand Rounds is mandatory. Attendance
at resident conferences is recommended. The intern will have no direct
supervising responsibilities for the third year medial student.
