Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Location: Sinai/Grace Hospital & Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan

Coordinator: Dr. Maury Ellenberg

Objectives:

  1. Enable the intern to become skilled in functional evaluation and anatomic correlation of pain and motion problems.
  2. Gain experience in the care of rehabilitation problems.
  3. Gain insight into the diagnosis of acute pain problems.
  4. Recognize a conservative treatment model for acute pain problems.

Methods:

  1. The intern will be assigned to at least three different physiatrists. They will spend at least two weeks on the rehabilitation ward, one full week performing or observing outpatient consults, and one full week on inpatient consults.
  2. Interns will observe the performance of electromyography.  Indications for and interpretation of this test will be discussed on a case by case basis.
  3. The intern will have the opportunity to independently assess patients. These patients will then be reviewed in detail by the attending physician and appropriate examination techniques, diagnostic problem-solving methods and treatment plans will be discussed with the student. The intern will also participate in the five weekly PM & R conferences and there will be three two-hour conferences geared directly for the students and interns given by the resident staff.
