Orthopaedic Surgery

Objectives:

The transitional intern will become an active member of the Orthopaedic Surgery team within Detroit Medical Center Hospitals and outpatient clinics. The intern will acquire an understanding of pathological processes relevant to Orthopaedic Surgery. These will include but are not limited to: degenerative arthritis of joints, primary and metastatic tumors of the skeletal system, sports medicine, pediatrics, fracture managememt, and metabolic response toto trauma. He/she will develop the necessary skills to conduct preoperative evaluations and provide postoperative care. He/she will learn surgical approach and technique.

Methods:

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers only one elective. The intern will be exposed to a curriculum which relates to each subspecialty area. The intern will be assigned to an individual member of the faculty for one month. During this period of time the student will be with the faculty member in the office, clinic, operating room and during ward rounds. The intern will be delegated appropriate responsibility in each clinical setting and will actively participate in all didactic sessions, including weekly Grand Rounds, monthly Journal Club, and the monthly Mortality and Morbidity Conference. The intern will take call one night per week. The Department will select the faculty member with whom the intern will rotate. All subspecialties will be involved and the students will have an opportunity to request individual rotations. The Department will attempt to honor the requests but the student may not receive his/her first choice. The various rotations will include: Children's Orthopaedic Surgery, Traumatic Orthopaedic Surgery, Shoulder, Spine, Hands, Joints and Microsurgery.
