Urgent plea for DMC volunteers as youth pour in for AAU Junior Olympics!

Children’s Hospital of Michigan organizers are issuing an urgent plea for volunteers. CHM is the healthcare sponsor for the 2003 AAU Junior Olympics and in desperate need for first-aid volunteers as thousands of young athletes pour into the area. At least 15,000 youth have come from around the country to Southeast Michigan to show they can excel in a variety of sporting events.

Those of us with basic first-aid training can be an inspiration to them by showing up to hand out water, patch up bumps and scraps, and perform other first-aid related duties. You may also enjoy watching our young people engage in positive, healthy activities.

Perks include free t-shirt, free food and beverage at event, free parking at Ford Field and EMU and free passes to all events on all days. Volunteers need not volunteer an entire shift- any amount of time will be accepted. Review the schedule and set aside some time to help the nation’s youth.

What is Cover the Uninsured Week?

Building on the momentum generated by the February 2002 launch of the Covering the Uninsured educational and advertising campaign and Web site, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and some of the most influential organizations in the United States will cosponsor Cover the Uninsured Week. This unprecedented weeklong series of national and local activities will take place from Monday, March 10, through Sunday, March 16, 2003, in an effort to sensitize the public and opinion leaders to the plight of the more than 41 million Americans who lack health insurance.

The goals of Cover the Uninsured Week are to:

Raise public awareness of the plight of more than 41 million uninsured Americans
Demonstrate broad support for action on the issue
Generate significant media attention to the issue, both nationally and in key communities across the country
Encourage other national organizations to join The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and 15 partner organizations in an effort to increase attention to the issue
Create a single rallying point for groups and individuals working to extend health care coverage to the uninsured.
